From today on and for the next two weeks I will post a picture from the Oktoberfest, the biggest beer festival in the world, every day as I'm going to be there pretty much every day. So if you are interested stop by - I hope you'll enjoy it!

Finally! Munich's 5. Sesaon started today at noon. Christian Ude, the mayor of Munich, tapped the first keg of delicious Bavarian beer today at 12p.m. in Schottenhamel beer tent and therby opened the 180. Oktoberfest. Munich will be a madhouse for the next 16 days!

The Oktoberfest is the world's largest beer festival with over 6,000,000 visitors each year. Every year those visitors consume approximately 7,000,000 liters of beer in one of the 14 big (1,000-10,000 seats) or 15 small (<1,000 seats) beer tents. The Wiesn (as it is called in Bavarian language) also featueres a large number of fun rides, like rollercoasters, ghost trains, a ferris wheel, and other smaller rides. And here is a little guide for my fellow Germans from north of the river Main on how to pronounce the most important Bavarian words - I always have to throw up in my mouth a little whenever I hear those beautiful Bavarian expressions pronounced in a wrong (Prussian) way! It is in German, as it doesn't make any sense for an English speaker anyway:

Maß, die [mas] - Genus: Femininum, Numerus: Singular - im Gegensatz zum preußischen Maß [ma[i]ːs] ist die bayrische Maß [mas] weiblich! Es heißt folgerichtig also DIE Maß. Bei der Aussprache ist zu beachten, dass das A kurz ist wie im Wort Fass, und nicht wie im Wort Maßband! Der Plural des Wortes Maß ist übrigens ebenfalls Maß und auch hier bleibt das A kurz (eine Maß [mas], zwei Maß [mas], drei Maß [mas], usw.).

Wiesn, die - Genus: Femininum, Numerus: Singular - Wiesn ist das bayrische Wort für Wiese, der meistgebrauchte Ausdruck für das Oktoberfest und gleichzeitig ein Hinweis auf den Veranstaltungsort, die Theresienwiese. Daher ist der Numerus des Wortes Singular (Beispiele: Die Wiesn hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Ich habe auf der Wiesn 7 Maß getrunken.). Da das Wort im Singular steht wird auch kein Apostroph gebraucht, der eine Auslassung des Buchstaben E andeuten würde.

Oans, zwoa, drei - gsuffa! - Bayrisch für "Eins, zwei, drei - gesoffen!". Die Aussprache ist genau gleich der Schreibweise. Und nicht anders![/i]
