Black Country Museum

Today my class visited the Black Country Living Museum as part of their historical study of the Victorians. In each of the places they stopped there were volunteers dressed in period costume really to talk to the children about life during the Victorian era.

The children took part in an atmospheric journey underground to find out how and why miners worked the “Thick Coal” and other seams in the Black Country in the 1850s, highlighting the harsh and dangerous working conditions. They also experienced a Victorian class room including a role play session to experience the strict discipline of the classroom, with a taster of the 3 Rs reading, writing and arithmetic and learning by rote.

They came back tired, but I'm hoping this will have a real impact on our further study in History!
