The Liver Building

Today was spent at Caffè Nero in Southport with Tom. Talked about everything really; life, finishing his dissertation, more on life and worrying about having to think about what is next…as well as talking about what is recent in both our lives. We have unanimously decided that we don’t yet want to be in the “real world” and would much prefer to stay in the university bubble…a shame that we have to grow up right? Anyways, it was so nice to see him, especially since the only times we do see each other are in the holidays! After seeing Tom until late afternoon, I decided to surprise Mum in work with a fresh double chocolate muffin, as she was going to be working late and wouldn’t have any dinner until past half past eight. Ended up staying for a while after the delivery of said muffin and helping her set up some things for the meeting she was running later on. It seems strange now that I can see her every day, especially since I haven’t been able to do that for nearly a year.

This photograph is once more taken in Liverpool, on the way to Luke’s house. This is the Liver Building, but from another angle to the one taken on Tuesday 10th September. So the Liver Building was opened in 1911, and it has the honour of being one of the first buildings in the world to be constructed using reinforced concrete and the clock towers have the largest electronically driven clocks in the United Kingdom, even bigger than Big Ben. There are a lot of different stories about the Liver Birds and what they represent including that one looks out over the city to protect its people and the other looks out to sea at the new sailors coming in to port. Alternatively, local legend states one Liver Bird is male, looking inland to see if the pubs are open, whilst the other is female, looking out to sea to see if there are any handsome sailors coming up the river. Yet another local legend, probably reflecting Liverpudlians' cynicism, avers that every time a virgin walks across the Pier Head, the Liver Birds flap their wings. Who knows!

Anyways, so my evening was spent with Luke, although at a new house with new housemates (new university year, doctors always have to switch housemates once everyone graduates!). These new housemates are absolutely lovely, and it was soon decided that we would simply go to another Greek restaurant to start our evening…a rather rare restaurant as it is a BYOB! We then of course had to sample the many different bars and clubs of Liverpool, finishing the night at Baa Bar (which always seems to happen with Luke!). Now I will admit, our group dynamic was a bit random….Luke, James, Dom, George and me being the only girl – what did people think I wondered!
