THE SACRIST'S GATE.

A Sacrist is the person in charge of the sacred vessels and vestments etc of a Holy Place. In Ely High Street this is the Sacrist's Gateway and the Goldsmith's Tower, built 1322 by Alan de Walsingham, the Sacrist at the time, as an entrance to the mason's yard and buildings of the Sacristry, along with the goldsmith's tower. It was built of Carr stone rubble and Barnack stone dressings with flanking buttresses and a castellated parapet. The first storey windows have cusped arches and leaded lights. I wandered around with a friend enjoying the lovely day. As I have family living here I am often in the area and look forward to another visit soon.
