The Russian Sub

UPDATE:
Thanks everyone for voting this entry into the spotlight!

How on earth did this 1950’s Russian Foxtrot B-80 Submarine that I shot at dawn end up in Amsterdam?

I heard a nice sailors anecdote to it.

It’s said that there was an entrepreneur – like sir Richard Branson – who spotted this sub for sale on a Russian website for a mere € 50.000,-. Hardly any money for this immaculate sub as the many detail photos on the site proved, so our businessman immediately phoned the Russian wharf and was assured the vessel was in mint condition, but wanted to get rid of the monster as it took to much space on the yard. Actually the only condition for the absolute bargain was that it had to be paid cash, which was no issue for our entrepreneur. The next day he set off to the Russian shipyard together with a just as enthusiastic friend and a briefcase full of money.

When the arrived they were welcomed by five Russian guys, but not really the businessmen they had expected. Feeling pretty uncomfortably they stepped out of the car and had no option than follow their hosts along the quay till they arrived at a battered rotten sub, not remotely resembling the pictures on the web.

They stammer that this is not the same submarine as on the photo, but one of the Russian men pulls out a gun and says: ‘We do not care, you pay us the 50.000 now and you leave with submarine or nobody ever hears from you again’

Reluctantly they paid and had it dragged to the NDSM wharf where it’s rotting away now.

Apparently it’s for sale now, at a retail price of € 1,-, but before it can be demolished any future owner must first pay a deposit of about 1 million to ensure that it is done according to European regulations.

Big chance this will be its last resting place till nature eventually makes it disappear all by it’s self ;-)

I couldn’t choose between two shots, the other can be seen here. I eventually choose for this paradise like shot as it fits my write up best and the three dark clouds work as a warning sign ;-)
