Waiting at the Station

The monsoons arrived in Seattle today, but we luckily had matinee tickets for the Pacific NW Ballet and were treated to an AMAZING FABULOUS WORLD PREMIER of Twyla Tharps 135th ballet, Waiting at the Station! She is the first “Artist in Residence” here and has spent time last spring and this summer working on this new piece with music from New Orleans legendary Jazz artist Allen Toussaint, who was here at the piano today for this performance! (It opened last night) Pretty exciting! Twyla, who I think is a genius, wanted to work with him and said she’d set the ballet in new Orleans.
If you are a Twyla fan and want to hear an 8 min interview about working this piece in Seattle , go here. It also has a smidgen of Allen Toussaint playing and singing. (no singing in the ballet.) Of course to see more you can go to Twyla's website or Toussaint’s website. Such a great combination of modern dance and ballet set in the 40s in New Orleans... (also on the program along with Brief Fling was 9 Sinatra songs... - our era! a piece that is 31 years old and word has it that she still made some surprising changes in the choreography for this performance!)
I have her book The Creative Habit which is full of practical ideas about her work methods. (If only I could do them!)

Oh yes, the blip. they're not really 'waiting at the station". Have no idea why these folks lined up outside the opera house IN THE RAIN to have their photos taken by professional photographers - (wedding??) they put the umbrellas down for about 1 minute, but I like this shot with the umbrella better - with reflections from inside the opera house.

a few more days of Square September....
