Long Ground

What a beautiful day! I have some lovely photos of mist this morning and a rosy sunset this evening, but decided to record in my journal the state of the crops.

We harvested the spring barley in this field a couple of months ago, it's probably been brewed into lager by now. We drilled oil seed rape into the cultivated ground (we have a 3 crop rotation: wheat, barley, rape). The rape has germinated strongly (unlike last year when it was so wet), that's the green leaves that you can see in this field. The yellow is volunteer barley (seed spilled during the harvest that has also germinated), which is now dying off.

Old field names are wonderful. You can probably work out why this field is called "Long Ground". Some field names are factual like "50 acres", some are descriptive like "Horse Tynings", where the village working horses used to graze, and some reflect previous owners like "Prim's Lawn".
