A rose by any other name...

I've been trying to get to grips with the wild roses at the nature reserve, using the really interesting BSBI handbook by Graham and Primavesi. This is a great time for checking out the hips, but it's a bit tricky when flower shape, colour and scent becomes important for separating out sub-species! This little collection came from one small patch of scrub, no more than 10 metres square. It includes Field Rose, Rosa arvensis, and possibly three different named sub-species of Dog Rose, Rosa canina.
