Pewsham Middle Lock

It had been three years since my last visit to Pewsham, near Chippenham, to see the gradual restoration of the Wilts and Berks Canal by dedicated volunteers, and I had heard that a further stretch of it had been filled with water.

The public footpath to the old towpath takes one past Middle Lodge Farm. There are signs that the incumbents of the farm don't entirely welcome the added number of dog walkers, cyclists and canal enthusiasts who are attracted by the canal path, but I was found to be of interest to some horses in an adjacent field.

The canal is reached at Pewsham Top Lock, where work continues on clearing the canal bed of rubbish and undergrowth. There appears to be remains of a former side pond below the lock, and a pile of bricks shows that some work is ongoing there.

The watered section of the former canal now extends north as far as Pewsham Middle Lock, shown here, and there is some impressive looking industrial architecture there for drainage.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Magic Theatre - I Got The Answer (2013)
"Ooberman were one of the great lost bands of the late 90s, if a band who had a top 40 single and sufficient Radio 1 play can strictly be “lost". Their joint voices Dan Popplewell and Sophia Churney now trade in baroque folk as The Magic Theatre, whose debut album is due in the autumn. The first single I Got The Answer is a sweetly lovely positivist countrified lilt that suits this weather pretty well, if occasionally interrupted by the South American percussive jam next door."
