Lanark

Out for lunch with my mother and we called into the historic town of Lanark. William Wallace is reputed to have killed the Sheriff of Lanark because he had violated Wallace's wife. It is a thriving market town to this day.

Beyond the houses the land dips down before rising up again where the green fields are and in that hollow lies the village of New Lanark which was the site of an experiment in humane factory conditions organised by Robert Owen. The river Clyde was used there to power the new machines of the industrial revolution and Owen endeavoured to ensure fair wages, reasonable hours and education for the children.
