The Devils Night

We went to see the Devils at Riba-Roja last night, being the last night of their summer festa.

It starts with a firework display on the bridge over the River Ebre and then everyone walks up to the square where there's a lot of banging of drums and chanting... I suppose it gets the Devils worked up!

Then the Devils parade through the streets and end up at the church, where they pretend to burn it down. But we didn't make it to the end, we were tired and are not very good at late nights any more and it was half twelve by the time the procession had passed us.

The only other time I've been to the Devils was two years ago, and I hated it because the fireworks were so close... very little is ever roped off here. But I'm a little more used to the Spanish way with fireworks now and had a great night!

One of the things I love about living here is that individuals are allowed to be responsible for their own safety, but, there's one thing that puzzles us... you need a licence to have a bonfire in the winter and they're not allowed at all in the summer, bbqs are suspect, and yet fireworks are let off all over the place.
