Salisbury Cathedral at Evensong

Before Evensong, more accurately. We were already seated in the quire (choir), with the candles already lit. It was a wonderful service, with superb music--a choir of adults and children, and an incredibly powerful organ.

The Cathedral is superb--uniformly gothic in style; the main part was completed in just 38 years, starting in 1220. It was my first visit, though I have known it for years through John Constable's paintings of it--such as this one at the Met in New York.

It was a good day, despite terrible English weather: cold, rainy and windy. (We were all the more thankful for yesterday's wonderful weather for Stonehenge.)
