The last field

Now there is a break in the weather to plough and drill the last field with corn. Here the contractor is ploughing up what is left of a red clover field that was planted three years ago to give nitrogen to the soil. It was the first time we had planted this crop which we probably wont plant again in a hurry as the cattle were unable to graze it. Red clover in a large quantity gives them bloat. Instead it is made into silage which is much safer for them and they are able to eat it in the winter months. T is drilling in the corn behind the plough, some way behind as the soil is wet and heavy and it is a slow job. They started at 7.30 am this morning wondering whether to go ahead or not, and finished at 10 pm. Now there is a risk of slugs or the corn seed may rot as it is so damp, we shall just have to see!
