Lest We Forget...

Willie Motherwell was my mum's uncle who was killed in the Ypres Salient in 1917 shortly after his twentieth birthday. My mum never knew him but a few years ago we went over to Belgium to visit his grave near the town of Poperinge. As with all the Commonwealth War Grave Cemeteries it is a beautiful, peaceful place and he rests under the shade of a small tree.

I would hope to return to visit the grave on the hundredth anniversary of his death, God willing. His mother would not allow her surviving sons- including my grandfather, to wear khaki shirts which were so common after the war was over.
