Sleep Tight

DDW's November Challenge Day 14: "Favourite Time of Day"

No, sleeping is not my favourite time of the day. It's actually something I'm not very good at these days, so my day usually starts at around 06:00 (no alarm clock required) when I check to see if there have been any messages from Rosina and then settle down to see what's happening on blip and read a chapter or two of my book.

Currently reading 'Sovereign' by C. J. Samspon. The 3rd in a series of books on the adventures of a hunchback lawyer, Matthew Shardlake and set in Tudor England; during the reign of Henry VIII. A kind of medieval 'who done it' that paints a very realistic picture of life in Tudor England. A great read for anyone who likes their history to come alive.

And the title for this blip?

Well, in Tudor times, mattresses were secured on a bed frame with the use of ropes crossed in a grid like pattern. If these ropes were pulled taught then the mattress would tighten and provided a firmer and more comfortable bed to sleep on.

Other modern sayings that we can thanks the Tudors for:

~ Square meal
~ A cut above the rest
~ Let your hair down
~ A sorry sight
~ Fancy free
~ Fair play
~ Hot blooded
~ Wear your heart on your sleeve
~ Hair stand on end
~ More fool you
~ Set one's teeth on edge
~ Too much of a good thing
~ Vanish into thin air
~ There is method in his madness

Here endeth today's lesson :-)
