Dromagorteen

I went off on a little adventure this morning to see some ancient sites in the Bonane valley, Co. Kerry. The area is so rich in archeology, my blip is of the Dromagorteen Ring Fort, a really impressive site that was constructed two thousand years ago. It's the largest of some twenty ring forts in the valley and it's size and location suggest it was the fortified home of a chieftain. It was surrounded by a deep ditch and a double earth embankment, the entrance visible behind the mountain ash was aligned to the rising sun on the Winter Solstice. There was a large stone circle nearby and a standing stone.
