Perfect day's ending

This afternoon I was at the nature reserve, burning up some brash from trees that were cut down at a work party a few weeks ago. Despite the dripping wet pile of branches I managed to get a good bonfire going. As the light faded a tawny owl started hooting nearby and a group of pheasants began their rather hysterical squabbling. Groups of jackdaws and rooks swooped around noisily, getting ready to roost in the thickest part of the wood and I heard a cluster of redwings flying over. It's hard to beat this time of the day with a blazing bonfire and the sounds of wildlife echoing around the valley. Eventually, the fire was safe to leave and hunger drove me home.
