The Last Chance

Tonight (Friday 29 Nov) we went to the dogs – nothing new there you may say. This however was the Peterborough Greyhound Racing Track.

Neither PaulineW nor myself are keen on race meetings nor gambling of any kind (except the lottery), in fact this was the first time either of us had ever been to a race meeting in seventy years on this planet (a little less for the better half).

The outing was organised by the ‘Friday Night Social Club’ that meets in the Bull Inn Rippingale (birthplace of the Archers . . . ) on a Friday evening and usually staggers home in the we small hours of Saturday morning. It was decided to try something different for this years Xmas meal/outing, and the dog track at Peterborough have a tremendous restaurant where you can have a meal sitting at a table with a panoramic view of the dog-track. Excellent table service, food not bad (quite good – good value for money), and your own personal ‘Runner’ (shared with a dozen other tables) to take your bets and bring you your winnings?!?!

In spite of our trepidations we had a great evening with Mrs W picking most of the winners (very scientifically – went by the names she/we liked) and come the last race we had broken even, so we threw caution to the wind an blew £2 on a ‘Reverse Forecast’ which we got 50% correct.

Will we go again? Only time will tell . . .
