U-Bahn München: 18/100 Fröttmaning

Munich underground: 18/100 Fröttmaning

Like the station at Freimann, Fröttmaning underground station is actually located above-ground. It was opened in 1994 in almost completely empty space at the northern city limit of Munich for the single purpose to provide access to a multi-story park-and-ride car park, in an attempt to incentivise people not to drive into the city centre by car. After Germany was awarded the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup and Bayern Munich (and its smaller rival 1860 Munich) decided to build a new stadium just north of that car park, it was decided, that a station with only two platforms won't fit the purpose any more. So the station was torn down and rebuild some 70 metres to the north (closer to the stadium then under construction) in 2002-2005, this time with two more spacious platforms.

Today's blip shows football supporters (mostly those of Bayern Munich) alighting the trains at Fröttmaning underground station. I decided to take a picture with a really crowded station before a football match this time, because I think that suits the location much more. As you can see the station is rather spacious and high and has a friendly white colour. The roof somehow resembles the exterior of the near Allianz Arena, too.

By the way, Bayern Munich was playing against Eintracht Braunschweig, the very last of the German Bundesliga, today. Not surprisingly, Bayern won 2-0.

Lesson learned today: if you are facing a huge oncoming crowd with an DSLR head on, you part the crowd in front of you like Moses parted the Red Sea. People seem to be a little afraid of being photographed.
