Pilgrim for the day

Had to go to St Andrews today so an opportunity to visit what's left of the cathedral.

Building started around 1160 and continued over the next 150 years during which time the west end was blown down in a storm and rebuilt between 1272 and 1279. It was eventually dedicated in 1318 in the presence of King Robert I (The Bruce). Fire partially destroyed it in 1378 with restoration completed in 1440. It was Scotland's largest medieval church and the seat of Scotland's leading bishops and, from 1472, archbishops.

During the Scottish reformation in 1559 the building was stripped of its alters and images (cleansed) and by 1561 it had been abandoned and left to fall into ruin. It's now in the care of Historic Scotland.

There's more to St Andrews than just golf, although that has its own pilgrims too I suppose.
