Expeditions

All round town are men
hunched on shoe-shop benches,
propping up the weary pillars
in department stores,
twisted ungainly among
the racks of scarves or earrings,
perched on mouldings
outside hairdressers,
as if it is their fate to wait
and wait and wait.
Why do they go?
Why don’t they just say ‘No’?
