At Ross: Strength through adversity..

I was thinking about the Ken Loach film, 'Cathy come home'. I had read an article written by the Guardian on the struggle of 'Cathy', and how this gritty 1960's film isnt so far removed from the struggle of recessional Britian today.

"So many of the scenes feel utterly contemporary. The developers who profiteer while those on lower incomes can't find affordable accommodation, the intractable and labyrinthine bureaucracy of the welfare state, blaming immigrants for the lack of social housing, blaming the unemployed for their own worklessness, even the violent prejudice directed at a Gypsy encampment, are all ongoing. As the cuts bite and the recession threatens to double-dip, there can be minimal expectation that this will do anything other than worsen."

I read about these traveller's in the complaints section of the local paper. I wonder whether seeing travellers brings about a deep pit of uncertainly, a gritty realism, to the fore. A sight that is best hidden. Like a huge bill stuffed back into the draw, a rent that cannot be paid. For these self sufficient travellers, they can move on. They know how to survive. For some, moving on is no option. Living with poverty is their only choice.
