Cityscapes

Through the lights and the haze

Tonight was a night of art and creativity. I started things off at Artspace for the opening of the "Colors of Life" photography exhibition. This international juried show will be here for a month before heading to Milan, Italy. There were some amazing works there tonight (as well as a few unremarkable ones). I kind of got an idea of what direction I want to take my art.

From there we moved to InLight. This is the second year for this massive exhibition. Five entire city blocks are filled with art exhibits featuring creative use of light. There were enormous video projections on the sides of buildings, windows full of color and moving images, LED hula hoops and sunglasses, glow sticks, colored flashlights, and even a few serious installations dealing with contemporary social issues. Like most things in this city this one night festival has great potential. It will likely be a few more years before this truly succeeds at becoming a significant event (despite the fact that thousands of people showed up tonight).

Perhaps my favorite installation was the one pictured here. In a back alley there was a row of lights set up with colored gels. Along this row were several fog machines and some sort of motion sensors. The color of the lights and the rate of fog production changed based on the input from the motion sensors. Absolutely awesome.
