Lighting the corner

What a wild day it's been. I ventured into the garden to feed the birds and take a few photos, but retreated inside quite quickly. I hope all of you who needed to have made successful journeys to your Christmas venue.

Inside the house it is cosy and warm.

At Christmas I light these floral lights in the corner of the lounge. I noticed how they illuminated the Dutch watercolour beside them. Towards the end of the War my father was in Holland where he met and made friends with a group of nuns and teachers. The soldiers took food to people who had been starving. One of the nuns, Sister Therese, gave Dad a few of her paintings. We are very fond of them. My photo does not really do justice to the painting which is behind glass.

A teacher, To Holscher, (1898 - 1953) was one of the group. She wrote a children's book about the war and gave a copy to Dad. We have it and regret we have never been able to read it in the original Dutch. There is not much about her on the internet, but she sounds an interesting person.

So, at a time when we all remember the people who are not here to share Christmas with us, let's celebrate their memories, or the knowledge and beauty they shared with us.
