Finally - a sharp wintery morning

Frost covered everything this morning and the roads were very icy. A number of cars were in ditches as I drove to the nature reserve and some roads were closed. At the reserve, north-facing slopes kept the covering of frost all day, picking out the shapes of leaves, like these fern fronds, whilst more open south-facing clearings were bathed in sun for a while. Despite the conditions I found 17 plants in flower and will report these as part of the New Year Plant Hunt run by the Botanical Society of the British Isles.
