Police cordon off beach near Carnoustie

6.3C starting bright then clouding over to give a dull afternoon with some showers. Breezy.

This is the sunrise which greeted Maeve the Deerhound and I when we went for our early morning wander along the country road today.

Morning grocery shopping as usual then after we put things away we decided to go for a local walk rather than drive through to Arbroath harbour. There had been an early frost and we thought that would give us firm footing in the field on the bridle path.

Down at the beach the tide was just starting to come in and there was plenty of sand to walk along. Approaching the Fishermen's huts we noticed a few people gathered round on the sand. There was pointing.

Then a policewoman came down from the huts area and joined the people. As we got closer we heard mention of taking some notes and just going to get some tape to close off the immediate area. I peeked as we walked past and wondered if I might have spotted bones.

Apothecary7 pottered around at the huts looking for possible blips. Maeve and I spotted the man from the end cottage inspecting the woven driftwood fence on the seaward end of his garden which has survived the high tides and surges of late. We wandered over and had a chat. He likes to see Maeve. I explained what we had seen and he wondered if they would be in the news again. Not so long since the boat capsize story. Apothecary7 came over to say hello then we went home for lunch.

As we left the huts area a second police car was approaching along the road in front of the cottages.

Before lunch I sent a private message on twitter to the editor of the local newspaper, the Guide and Gazette. The outcome is that Westhaven is in the news again. From the newspaper website ...

Police cordon off beach near Carnoustie

Police have cordoned off an area of the beach at Westhaven in Carnoustie today (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
A walker made a discovery between 12 noon and 1 p.m. and immediately alerted the constabulary.
A number of officers are combing the area which has been sealed off and labelled a crime scene.
A policeman at the scene said he could not comment on what the operation entailed, saying only that it may relate to a missing person enquiry.



You just never know what you might see when you go for a walk along the beach !
