Pen and Paper

Today's offering is a rendition of the texture of wood. Although computers and smartphones are normal tools of everyday communication now, I can't imagine we will totally discard our personal notebooks and diaries where we keep our jottings, ideas and private observations. I was given this impressive notebook years ago with its gorgeous wooden cover and painted design.

The pen holder in yew was a recent Christmas gift carved by a young person at the Corbenic Camphill Community, Perthshire. I've brought the two together on a wooden table and processed the image in black and white to bring out the grain and dramatise the lighting. In the notebook are quotations I have gathered and the first one just happens to be by film-maker Alfred Hitchcock whose name is synonymous with drama - "Drama is life with the dull bits cut out."
