The Edge of the Wold

Solitary gull

Most of my estuary shots have my tame solitary gull in them, so here is a close up of him/her on the railings along the River Kent in Kendal. It's a so-called first winter black-headed gull, distinguishable from adults by the brown on the wing feathers and the legs and bill that are more brownish than red. Soon this bird will develop its chocolate head for its first breeding season. As I walked along the river's edge I was looking out for the bird that was ringed in Finland 15 years ago, but most of them were too busy flying about looking for scraps to let me see.

It was a good weather day, only starting to rain in the early evening. I can cope with that.
