Nat

Nats are spirits that were worshipped in Burma before the arrival of Buddhism. Buddhism absorbed the local religion and Nats are happily incorporated into Buddhism today.

The Burmese are very superstitious and will not make an important decision without first consulting a Nat. The spirit medium passes an offering on to the Nat and interprets the response for the worshipper. We offered a few kyat and were told that our journey upriver was auspicious!
