Emma D's diary

At London: Tall and small......x

The city always marks a huge contrast for me. Tall vertical lines, short horizontals. Verticals against horizontals. Thats it.

My world of soft round or gently curving natural shapes contains very few tall verticals. Perhaps they are in the odd tall house, perhaps in the landmark of a church spire, or dominating grain store. Tall but not towering.

I think that an urban landscape is dominating. I feel small. Every building competing to be a landmark against the next. We are like the people in a Lowry painting, small, but significant cogs in the wheel of the city.

A rural landscape is at eye level, accessible. The horizon always your stabilising factor. I feel small, compared to a vast sunset. A huge dominating storm cloud can make you feel small and insignificant. The swell of a flood, a raging tide, small in relation to the power of nature.

The winter light casts long shadows. At home, the trees cast the same across the field. Everything is the same.....x
