Wayward Wander

The phrase "less is more" illustrates the alluring quality of open space. It evokes a strong sense of freedom because it insinuates assurance by maintaining its apparent state across a small-to-vast distance. A woodland does not evoke this same feeling because it is convoluted by its density and darkness . Human beings are an "edge species" by nature; we find security from a support backing as we look onto a "known" space.

Thus, this "known" space provided a much needed transition phase during exploration for ancient settlers. It would calm fears and reduce alertness, which explains the feeling of relief after leaving a woodland into a grand prairie. It is our ancient psychological ties to our ancestors as they traversed the landscape.

In the modern era, we still ensure open space a prominent presence in our designs. If it is appropriate, every design style has an incorporation of open space. It can be neatly cut or allowed to naturally grow into a prairie. Therefore, it is an element I believe we cannot live without for the sake of a healthy life.
