"None shall pass"

We are here in Leeds for a couple of days for a geology meeting at the University.

This is the Black Prince in Leeds City Square opposite the Queens hotel (where we are staying) and the railway station. He looks down at you disdainfully from atop his plinth, resplendent in his armour and pointy boots. Apparently he was well known for brutally duffing up the French and enjoyed a good bit of burning and pillaging (stuff the chivalry).

The 'Black Prince' is Edward of Woodstock, first Knight of the Garter and was unfortunate enough to become the first English Prince of Wales to die before his father so not make it to the throne. His son Richard II became king after the death of his father Edward III, just a year after the Black Prince's death. He was knocked of his perch by a dose of amoebic dysentery following a campaign but has been kept famous through history by featuring in a lot of stories from Shakespeare to Monty Python.
