Old Tom's Pulpit

Askernish Golf Course in South Uist is one of the jewels of world golf. And you don't have to take my word for it, as a very biased islander.
The world renowned John Garrity, who writes about golf for Sports Illustrated said: "Askernish is closer to a perfect 10 than any other course".
This is the 16th hole called Old Tom's Pulpit after the man who designed the course - Old Tom Morris. One of the legends of the game. Both as a player and designer.
The golf course is one of the main assets of Storas Uibhist, the community trust that now runs the island.
Every year Askernish attracts golfers from around the globe to play the course. Many of them return annually to take part in the Open weekend in August. This is now the biggest amateur tournament in the North of Scotland.
It's hard to believe that this wonderful links course was a nine hole course only a few years ago.
It goes to show what a community can achieve when they own their own land and they can develop assets for the benefit of everyone on the island.
And of course for the benefit of golfers from all over the world who make the pilgrimage to South Uist to marvel at the genius of Old Tom, who didn't really change anything.
Nature had already done a superb job of laying out the perfect links course.
