A Real Yorkshire Brew!

THE TETLEY.
"A new centre for contemporary art in the beautiful Art Deco headquarters of the former Leeds' Tetley Brewery Headquarters."

A brewery started in the early 19th Century by a Birkenshaw man no less!!
Not a lot of people know that Joshua Tetley (Centre portrait in the collage)
was born in Birkenshaw, into a middle class family of maltsters.

His grandfather William Tetley had a successful business in Armley, Leeds.

This expanded when Joshua's father took over, but went bankrupt in 1801.

Aged 29 Joshua married Hannah Carbutt at Sheffield Parish Church. She was from a wealthy family, and in 1822 (aged 44) Joshua leased William Sykes' Brewery in Hunslet, Leeds and so the famous brewery was started.

When the iconic Leeds landmark brewery closed in 2011, the beautiful 1930 Headquarters building was saved, and it has now opened as a centre for contemporary art, with a bar and restaurant.

You can see in the collage a view of the Art Deco staircase, the Board Room, the war memorial to the Tetley workers, ( which is in the entrance) and in the centre a portrait of the founder, Joshua Tetley.

Although MrC was brought up on Tetley Bitter he didn't have a pint at the bar.
( Driving, and he said it isn't like it used to be!!)
May try the restaurant later.

Won't go back for the art, which was none existent except for a display of
" The Reversing Machine" by Simon Lewandowski and Sam Belinfante.
We didn't really understand this, or see the point!
Just a record and clocks going backwards, and then forwards.
Sorry Simon and Sam

However an interesting visit on a very dull , wet, January day!
