and so it begun. pretty exhausting day with lots of maths and lots of socialising - some really great talks and one even about my field, which was good.

had a really lovely meal in the evening - we were 10 people but we managed to fit into a restaurant splitting into 6 and 4, and my table of 4 was a nice one - me, olin, igor and a french chap whose name escapes me now. i had a traditional bean stew to eat, which was delicious and had huge chunks of meat in it.

we were somehow found by someone from the conference who is permanently based in lisbon, and she took us to a traditional, tiny dimly lit bar which had traditional portugese music being played by two men with guitars and an alternating duo of a v. large man and a young girl singing. how lovely!
