My Scaredy Birds

Imposing something
new can be seen as threatening
to little beings

~ carliewired

I bought a very pretty birdbath at the grocery store last week. Yesterday, D set it up in the area where the birds are fed on the ground in front of the bougainvillea. It took some time the first day for my little feathered friends to trust that dangerous birdbath enough to come down for some seeds. They sat in the bougainvillea and discussed the problem of distrust at length. The volume of the discussion increased and fell until one brave bird decided to test his courage. When he had survived the experience the rest felt assured that they too could feed without fear of death or injury.

Today, the birds ignored the threat of the new birdbath entirely. Although it lists to one side in a most frightful manner, they carried on with their meals as though it did not exist. I can only hope that at some point another brave soul will risk landing on the edge of the birdbath. Perhaps he will discover the water and make the most of the opportunity.

The bougainvillea is looking so full and elegant these days. It is almost completely coloured, having recovered from the chilly temperatures of December. Most of the bracts were lost then.
