Abnormal Load

This morning a very large piece of machinery weighing 250 tonnes was being delivered to Bifrangi Forge in Lincoln, not far from where we live. Because it is so huge and heavy it required two lorries, one pulling, one pushing a large flat bed trailer - the vehicle itself is 60m long, 4m wide and weighs over 450 tonnes! This is the first part of a screw press for forging steel components - the next part will come next weekend, and will be even heavier!

This shot shows the front lorry, and the machine which resembles a giant green lego block! You can see some of the crew having to remove a signpost to stop the massive vehicle wrecking it when it heads round the corner onto St Rumbold Street. Although the route would have been meticulously planned, things like this got overlooked!

A rather larger oversight was checking that it would fit under the railway bridge on Spa Road. It arrived there around 10 AM, and it has only just gone under the bridge now, at almost 6:30 PM!They had to lower suspension, let air out of tires, remove packing and deal with fragile drains, but they have finally done it! At least next week they will have more idea what they are dealing with!
