Candlemas Crocus

Candlemas , a festival of lights. Forty days from Christmas and the midpoint between the shortest day and the Spring equinox, in the Catholic church candles are blessed on this day. A tradition now in our house to have a Turkey at both ends of the forty days of Christmas ... and a good excuse to have some friends round for a meal!

As we had visitors I was only afforded a short visit to the bulb frames, in the sunshine there was much to admire. Crocus kerndorffirum x leichtlinii is a rarely seen hybrid in an unusual shade of blue, quite vigorous it has increased to make a nice potful. There were other blip possibilities including the red plastic trombone that Edward (7) brought to play for us but crocus in sunshine will trump almost anything!
