Floating Lorry

I was hardly dressed this morning when our daughter telephoned to suggest that it was not a good idea for me and the GOG to go to shopping in Bishop’s Stortford this morning. Both schools in the village were closed as was Oliver’s school in Saffron Walden. The schools were not actually flooded, but the buses could not get through, nor could many teachers.

Nicola and Victoria arrived and we all went for a walk around the village. Unfortunately some houses were flooded and people were making sandbags. Apparently the council no longer supply sandbags, the suggestion is that you fill black dustbin bags with garden soil. They would need to be made in advance and firstly not everyone has garden soil and secondly, the bags would split as soon as they were moved; council you need to think again.

I chose this one because it shows the depth of the water in this location; this is also one of the areas where the water was quite close to the houses. The ASDA lorry made it through, turned left and made his delivery. My daughter spoke to him when he came back; he was not attempting the same route to leave the area.

The River Cam tributaries as well as the Croat had burst their banks in many places; the River Stort had also flooded the road and fields at Stansted Mountfitchet and Bishops Stortford. The depth of water on the common, not far from us, has three or four feet of water which was spilling over into the village hall car park. The benches, I blipped one on Sunday 5 January, are completely under water.

Once processed I will post the rest of my pictures on my Flickr account.
