Feathered Family

Like yesterday, today's been mostly cloud-bound here in the valley, except for about an hour towards the end of the afternoon. So with the light failing and clear skies not eventuating, I decided to see if I could capture a shot of one of the two clutches of chicks we have around at the moment.

The white family (one hen, Bianca and her three little white chicks) are doing well, but weren't in a position for me to isolated them away from other objects in the frame. Not so the brown hen, Brenda, seen here with three of her six chicks.

Brenda has gone back to overnighting in the coop with her two sisters and her rooster companion, leaving her babies to their own devices in one of Zoey's old kennels, which I've fitted out for them with a water feeder and plenty of pine bedding. These ones pictured are starting to spread their wings too, so it's cute to see them join up with their mum, wings flapping to get up speed, as they race from the sleeping quarters in the morning.
