Who was He?

This is my grandfather, Tom Allan, who lived from 1892 until 1936. I know little about him except that he was a widower, a miner, wrote poetry and made violins as a hobby. He was also a billiard champion. He died when my Dad was 12 and my Dad's grandmother, who looked after him, died the following year. My Dad never really spoke about his childhood and trying to get him to do so made him uncomfortable. I found the billiard cue, along with the photograph and his watch after my Dad died a couple of years ago. Now there is no-one to ask about him.
