Elkhorn Slough

Elkhorn is a 7 mile long tidal slough and estuary on Monterey Bay and provides a habitat for hundreds of species of plants and animals, including a huge variety of birds. These barns are relics from the dairy ranch that thrived here before the land became a State Marine Reserve and Conservation Area and a National Estuarine Research Reserve. We walked for a couple hours along the shore and saw too many birds to identify, all of them busy foraging in the mud flats at low tide.
