Don Quixote and Sancho

This pair of marionettes was at one of the booths at the Salon of Books and Letters (Salon du Livre et Papiers Anciens) on the outskirts of Paris. Several dozen dealers offered everything under the sun from books to posters, photographs, postcards and multifarious documents--altogether daunting. I spent part of the afternoon there, just scratching the surface.

I bought a lovely book of old photographs of Paris, entitled Dans les Rues de Paris au Temps des Fiacres ("In the streets of Paris in the time of carriages"), published 1950. The images are from the 1850s to the very early 1900s--with not a single photo of an automobile.
