Fire and Ice

Imagine this: 3000 people gathered on the shores of Lake Superior at dusk, ready to ski, snowshoe or hike a 10 km course across the frozen surface of Chequamegon Bay. Candles light the way and fires blaze at stations along the route. A light snow is swirling through the air and the full tries to peek between the clouds.

So here we are in Ashland for Book Across the Bay - all trained up and ready to ski in an actual event - an exotic, romantic and crazy event! It's a race but we are not being competetive. Skiers to the right, snowshoers to the left, it's a mass start.
