Nets in Waiting

The other day I talked of grapevines all over Marlborough having netting put on them. The netting is to protect the grape crop from birds. There are two styles of netting... the Bridal veil type that shrouds several rows at once and then the tighter more specifically placed netting.
Today I walked through one of the vineyards alongside the Taylor River Tracks. Meters and meters of netting have been stretched along the full length of rows of vines. It is either lying on the ground or alongside the trunks of the vine plants. In the next few days contractors will come into the vine yard edge the netting into position directly over the grape crop itself. Then the nets are secured into position with little plastic clips…just like the kind of clips that secure bags of bread!
I am sampling the grapes every day or so. They are gradually ripening… yum.
