An Old Well

We went to Northallerton today and after a wander round the shops we went to the Golden Lion Hotel for our lunch.

Historically this was an old coaching inn serving traffic on the Great North Road. It was a busy place with stabling for 75 horses. The current building dates from around the 1730s. However during relatively recent renovations some much older stonework uncovered and a deep well was found.

The well is situated in the main bar area and is the subject of today's blip. I have never seen it lit up before so it was quite interesting to peer down to the water at the bottom - the two spotlights are reflected in this. It is covered in a thick piece of glass (or perspex) level with the floor - you can see the carpet in the corners of the shot. It was funny how some people were walking right around and away from it. Children seemed to find it fascinating.
