The New File Server, Part II

The bits for the new file server arrived today and I obviously had to unpack them. I had two eager helpers. The case is definitely cheap, but will do the trick. As always some of the connectors were rather fiddly. The motherboard has surprisingly many jumpers - I thought they were all no longer required and everything was set through the BIOS. Obviously not. Ah, well had to hunt around for power cables, couldn't find a VGA cable. So I had find the old monitor. I was obviously too efficient with my previous tidying up efforts. Ah well, eventually got all the bits, plugged them in and powered on the system. Always a bit of a nail biter: Did I mess up? Are all the components working? - Well, the power came on, then a sequence of one long beep followed by two short beeps started. Damn. According to the interweb the board couldn't find the memory. Damn. It turns out that the board requires unbuffered memory whereas the memory I got is registered/buffered. Ah well, might need to order some after all...
