Powder Mill

Spending the weekend in Whitton, Near Twickenham where we lived for many years. I walked with T and Ruby and Archie who you met last week on Blip through Crane Park. I have many happy memories of Crane Park. Miss H moved from kiddies plastic push along to child's bike with stabilisers to her proper bike. We've grazed various parts of the body, spent hours pond dipping , watched the parakeets, walked Poppy (T&D's first dog!) and so on and so on. It is a narrow green oasis along the side of the River Crane which flows into the Thames at Twickenham. It is famous for its manufacture of gun powder and has a fascinating history. This is the shot tower, now a listed building. The licence was only lost for the production of gunpowder in 1927. Most of the houses in the area were built in the early 1930's as London expanded. I have attached a link to a information sheet with a brief history of the Powder Mills.History of Hounslow Powder Mills

I remember the amount of trees that fell in the 1987 storm in London, but the recent ones have taken a couple more, and the river was the highest I have ever seen it and T tells me it has fallen considerably this last week or so.
