My brother's home is kept warm in the wintertime by a modern ground source heat-pump that he installed himself. The house has been extended several times and the heat-pump with it. As a result the "engine room" where the main compressor resides, resembles an old fashioned boiler room in miniature: Always warm with at least one piece of equipment thrumming away somewhere amongst an inscrutable maze of piping, pumps and tanks.
