Last Year's Plantings

The dogs and I had another early start on our walk this morning. There was a real nip in the air…..almost a frost. That was a bit of a shock for the system. Luckily I had checked on what the temperature was outdoors before leaving home and had dressed accordingly. I even wore gloves.
The virtually clear sky has heralded a fine day. I do hope that is the case in Christchurch where they will be dealing with the aftermath of a dreadful storm.
The grape vines that were planted in September last year are doing very well. It is hard to believe that they have been in the ground for nearly six months. At the moment a number of workers are busy tidying the vines, removing laterals and the like.
This image shows the early sun just tipping the tops of the posts in the new area. The whitish box-like shapes that can be seen at the base of each plant are “Grow-Guards”. These waxed cardboard guards protect the tender young plants from rabbits, other pests and adverse winds. It will be interesting to see at what stage they are removed.
